Sea of Cortez Exhibition Field Trip

The Susan K. Black Foundation supported the 2011 Sea of Cortez Exhibition Field Trip of thirty artists to San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. SKB provided the funding for transportation from Tucson, AZ to the rich natural habitats of San Carlos on the Eastern coast of the Gulf of California.

Artists painted and worked for a week producing works in plein air, botanical illustrations, sketch books with journal entries, wildlife paintings and sculptures, photographs, and other media.  The works reflect the flora and fauna of the various habitats of the area including marine life, the regions desert topography, mangrove lagoons, and scenic inland areas.

Naturalist, artist, and SKB board member DeVere Burt addressed the artists about the SKB Foundation and its work.

The resulting works made up an exhibition at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute in Tucson curated by Dr. David Wagner, Phd., the trip’s organizer and also curator or the SKB Blossoms exhibitions and tours.  Classes are taught by professional artists trained to provide instruction consistent with the school’s objectives and curriculum. The program culminates in a school wide program and exhibition of student art for the students, parents, and community.
